Increasing Affordability and Accessibility
When my Mom was seriously sick, she spent years battling the health care system, so trust me, this fight is personal. America has the best medical care in the world – if you can afford it. But too many families are just one illness or accident from bankruptcy. Outrageous out-of-pocket emergency or critical care costs make it nearly impossible to save enough to cover a serious medical condition.
In the State Senate, I led the fight for affordable insulin and reduced prescription drug coverage. The federal government has the power to fix this; it provides health services and has massive purchasing power. But big insurance and pharmaceutical companies are standing in the way, protecting their profits. Medicare only began negotiating drug prices in 2025, but the current list of drugs is too limited. We should expand Medicare and Medicaid’s ability to negotiate for lower prices on most prescription medicines. That would not only lower costs for patients, but it would save billions in taxpayer dollars.
Medicare for All: We can guarantee affordable healthcare for everyone by simply making Medicare available to all Americans who want it, while allowing people to opt out if they prefer their private insurance. This will lower the cost of both Medicare and private insurance by lowering the average age, and utilizing a cost-neutral system that already exists. Despite what so many people want you to think, this problem can be solved, if we just have the will to fight for affordable health care for everyone.
